Causes of low testosterone
A decrease in a man's testosterone levels is caused by a deficit of testosterone in the blooddue to impaired testicular function or a disruption of the hormonal axis that regulates testicular function. This deficit is also known as hypogonadism.
Hypogonadism manifests itself through various symptoms including (but not limited to) mood swings, lack of libido, insomnia and/or erectile dysfunction, among others.
Unfortunately, symptoms (erectile dysfunction, for example) are often confused with the real cause (hypogonadism), especially when it comes to low testosterone.
When low testosterone is the cause of sexual, physical or mental symptoms, we will not achieve anything if only these symptoms are treated or alleviated. The only way to find an efficient and long-lasting solution is to treat the cause of these symptoms -: low testosterone or hypogonadism.
Causes of low testosterone
- Primary hypogonadism: Direct involvement of the testicle, which is unable to produce the minimum testosterone requirements, an involutive process that worsens with age.
- Cryptorchidism: Lack of descent of the testicle at birth, which may be unilateral or bilateral.
- Klinefelter's syndrome: The addition of one or more X chromosomes plus a Y chromosome, a male and additional female chromosomes. Its diagnosis is confirmed by genetic study (karyotyping) associated with the characteristic clinical findings. Treatment includes TRT.
- Chemo or Radiotherapy: With compromised testicular structure and function.
- Infections: Both viral, for example: Mumps, echovirus, flavivirus, or fungal infections, and severe orchitis caused by gram-negative bacteria, or chronic orchitis due to mycobacteria.
- Drugs with antiandrogenic effect: In high doses of Cimetidine, Spironolactone, Ketoconazole, Flutamide, Cyproterone, Psychoactives, Metoclopramide, Opioids.
- Anabolic atrophy: In excessive and sustained supraphysiological doses, atrophy may occur due to the use of anabolic drugs with the consequent testicle functional incapacity.
- Obesity: part of secondary hypogonadism that affects the hormonal axis with a consequent decrease in testosterone production.
- Alcoholism: alcohol is a toxin that affects the body through multiple pathways, but it can be a direct cause of testicular atrophy and decreased testosterone production.
- Other causes: HIV-AIDS, Hyperprolactinemia (increased prolactin), Hemochromatosis (iron overload), Cushing's syndrome (Hypercortisolemia), etc.
Although a sedentary lifestyle, stress, and poor eating habits may play a role in low testosterone levels the reality is that they can affect any man over time.
If you suffer from hypogonadism, you must optimise your testosterone levels.
Regardless of your lifetime testosterone levels, it has been proven that at a certain age, testosterone levels begin to decline. Generally, it is from the age of 40 that the level of free testosterone begins to decline, but each man has his own body and circumstances that are worth examining.
Once testosterone production begins to decline, a healthy lifestyle, exercising and adeqaute rest can help in keeping us healthy, but we will not be able to recover the levels naturally.
Most men go to specialised clinics when problems arise, especially in the sexual field (dysfunctions, weak erections, premature ejaculation, etc.). But few of us realize that, if we suffer from hypogonadism, we must act on the CAUSE of the dysfunctions, not on the symptoms.
Therapies such as waves, organ injections and pills only act locally and temporarily.
